Interchange 88 on the southbound Garden State Parkway in Lakewood will be closed permanently as of 7 p.m. Monday, officials with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority announced.

The closure is part of ongoing improvements being made to the connections between the Parkway and local roads at interchanges 88 and 89 for Brick and Lakewood.

Southbound drivers who want to access Route 70 will now exit at interchange 89 and drive as directed over a newly constructed service road. Those drivers will pay a toll on exit at interchange 89, but will no longer pay a toll at interchange 88.

“The change will not affect the amount of the toll paid,” officials said in a statement.

Signs on the southbound Parkway will direct drivers to use interchange 89 to reach Route 70.

The work to close interchange 88 will begin Monday evening and will be finished before rush hour Tuesday morning. There will be detours in place directing motorists to Route 70 while the overnight work is being done.

OK, Turnpike Authority honchos, now how about adding a southbound exit somewhere between exits 89 and 82 for Toms River (and the Benny drivers going to Seaside 5 months a year)? That would alleviate the daily traffic jams on Brick Blvd. southbound.

It could be at Church Rd. in Toms River, or it could be built by adding a southbound exit to (the northbound-only) exit 83. Thousands of drivers would appreciate this long-overdue new exit.

Yeah, a few additional southbound exits would probably be a good idea given the nature of the area. I’d rather have a few lonely and seemingly out of place exits if it helps relieve summer congestion and get people down here to spend more money faster.

  • Just for fun, NJ.com did a story on this as well and the following comment made me laugh…

So now I will be getting off at interchange 89 and will pay a toll. How refreshing to hear that I will NOT pay a toll at interchange 88 which apparently no longer exists.

How about a south bound exit on Whitty rd.They already own the property

This came up on my Facebook feed so I had to check it out. I lived in the shore are for 35 years but moved across the country out west. The toll thing made me laugh. They are ludicrous. Out west there are no tools and most states do not have them. And people don’t understand them. To have to pay to drive on a road? People of New Jersey need to wake up and elect the correct people to stop the corruption and bleeding of your state. There are no reasons for tolls other then to line the pockets of some. Taxes, budgeting and federal money already pay for roads. The amount the turnpike authority gets daily from tolls does not make sense.
