A Brick Township woman was issued summonses for careless driving and driving while using a cell phone after hitting a parked Toms River police car earlier this week.

The accident occurred Feb. 11, police said.

Tia Leach, the Brick resident, was driving her 2000 Volvo on Hooper Avenue near Silver Bay Road when she drifted onto the right shoulder and struck the left rear end of the police vehicle, which was parked on the shoulder of the roadway with its lights on, police spokesman Ralph Stocco said. The police car was parked there because its driver, Patrol Officer Michael Cassady, had just completed a call for service.

After impact the Volvo spun around 180 degrees and came to rest in front of the officer’s car, Stocco said. Neither Cassidy nor Leach were injured in the incident.

How many silly incidents have to happen before people get the message – don’t use cell phone while driving! She is lucky she did not hurt the officer or someone else walking along side of the road!
