Fluids From Vehicle Ignited Tires at Brick Recycling Site

Firefighters from numerous Brick fire companies knocked down a blaze at the Brick Recycling company Monday.

The company’s yard is located on Old Hooper Ave., just south of Drum Point Road. The road was closed for about an hour Monday. Dark smoke could be seen billowing into the air on the barrier island, across Barnegat Bay.

Kevin Batzel, director of the township’s bureau of fire prevention, said fluids were being removed from a vehicle at the site when a battery caused a spark. The flash fire then spread to nearby tires.

All of Brick’s fire companies, plus the Silverton company, responded. Because there is no water lines on site, Batzel said, a hose had to be connected from a hydrant near the Elks lodge across the street and dragged far back into the site.

“One o’clock on a 95 degree day is not the best time to be fighting a fire,” Batzel said.
