The Kmart store in Brick will remain open amid a new round of closures announced Thursday by Sears Holdings, the big box store’s parent company.

Located in the Laurel Square shopping center between routes 70 and 88, Kmart has long been subject to rumors of its closure, especially since the Pathmark supermarket in the same plaza closed and significantly cut down on traffic.

The only local store on the list – and the only store in New Jersey as a whole – of properties to be shut down is the Sears store at the Ocean County Mall in Toms River. The company said the store would close in “early April.” The automotive section will likely close by the end of this month.

In all, 103 Kmart and Sears stores are closing across the country.

“Sears Holdings continues its strategic assessment of the productivity of our Kmart and Sears store base and will continue to right size our store footprint in number and size,” the company said in a statement. “In the process, as previously announced we will continue to close some unprofitable stores as we transform our business model so that our physical store footprint and our digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members.”

Liquidation sales will begin as early as Jan. 12 at the closing stores, the company said.

Hard to believe that there are KMarts that do less business than the Brick location.

    • KaayC

      Agreed!

When I was a kid (in the 70’s) the Brick Kmart used to have an eatery in the middle of it. It was a giant cafeteria partitioned off from the rest of the store. My grandma would go shopping while my grandfather took me in there and we’d slide our tray along the steel slider thing and get food. I’d hate to see what we were eating at a Kmart in the 1970’s.

The K Cafe was originally designed along with the Blue Light Special. All those old ladies needed someplace to hang out until the next light went off. Dan Bell has a really good video on YouTube about the decline of Sears/Kmart.

      • Creepy Green Light

I saw his little documentary about it. Brought back a lot of memories. I also remember where the McDonalds & Bonefish Grill are now (behind Kmart) there used to be a golf driving range there. After my grandfather would be done with Kmart, he’d take me to go hit a bucket of balls at the driving range. Seems like yesterday…

Have you watched his “Another Dirty Room” series? I’m not sure if I can stay in a motel after watching.

      • KaayC

        Is that on Netflix?

Oh okay thanx! I did watch the Sears Kmart series Green Light recommended. Seems like they are only in business to pay off negative equity. Hotels uh yeah, I took the plunge and bought a little place in Fl because hotel rooms just really been creeping me out these days. Even the high end ones! Tip: Have the housekeeping remove the forty seven pillows that now seem standard. Request two fresh polyester pillows and wipe surfaces with alcohol wipes. Also unplug the alarm that people can’t set – ( noone can idk why they try and don’t just use their cell alarm) this way you won’t get awakened by someone’s early flight wake-up. I have had it happen more than once lol Also tip the housekeeping in advance at least a partial tip. They will take care of you then.

      • Creepy Green Light

        I have not.

      • Jerseygal

I remember the cafeteria, used to like to get the hot pretzels there. They were yummy.,

      • Creepy Green Light

Glad I’m not the only one that remembers it. Seems like yesterday. After Kmart we’d go to the golf driving range where McDonalds & Bonefish Grill is (behind Kmart).

      • Andy Pat

That was the Arnold Palmer Driving Range, but that came after Putt-Putt, which also had batting cages and an archery range.

      • Global Warming is a Hoax

Putt-Putt was on Cedar Bridge Ave behind Brick Plaza . There is a car wash there now next to TD Bank.

      • Creepy Green Light

Yeah, I don’t remember miniature golf or batting cages/archery there. It was just a driving range when I was a kid. With a VW bug that was used as the golf ball picking up machine.

      • KaayC

I remember all the old timers gathering there too!

      • Andy Pat

When I was a kid in the 60s we went to the cafeteria inside Britt’s and H and L Green’s in Brick Plaza

      • Frank Rizzo

        Why…what did I say….

    • Global Warming is a Hoax

      You mean shop lift.

  • Lord Trump, Westeros

    yes!

  • KaayC

We all agree we need another supermarket. Problem is noone wants to compete with freakin Walmart. I dislike that store but have no viable option when there is a ten minute wait to enter and no parking at Shoprite. Walmart ain’t now and never was a store selling real food. Be careful, that highfructose corn syrup will turn you into a Walmartian.

    • Creepy Green Light

Because Wal Mart is usually a fiasco w/ how crowded it is. I often go to Kmart to pick up whatever BS things I need. And I don’t care if something is $199 at Walmart but it’s $2.59 at Kmart. It’s worth it because I can get in and out and do not get aggravated like I would at Wal Mart.

I wish Lakewood/Jackson would build its own Wal Mart to keep the fancies out.

      • KaayC

Yah I hear ya. I tried that too but KMart has no checkers at all! I mean we went from basically pretty good shopping to shopping that is awful in this town. Walmart has lives to check yourself out. Just absurd.

      • Creepy Green Light

Agreed. It is absurd. I miss Whole Foods (I lived out west for like 18 years). Great place to shop & eat.

      • KaayC

I love it out there, Been to Vegas, Aspen, Santa Fe, San Francisco, Santa Rosa, San Diego and Portland. I loved it all. So pricey there though.

  • Jerry Toboggan

You are the resident racist JWW…I guess I’ll have to start trolling you again boy

  • Jerry Toboggan

Will do to your mom, nigger lover

  • Jerry Toboggan

More of us than you, boy. DACA is dead jizz sucker

  • Jerry Toboggan

Whomever is in charge of moderating these comments needs to step up their game. The fact that they’re still there a day later tells me whomever is in charge either likes what they see or isn’t paying attention.

Also is anyone else getting mobile redirects when they visit Shorebeat to spam pages? I rarely have that issue but consistently have it with this site.

    • Global Warming is a Hoax

Like free spin awards from facebook? Thats from you going on porn sites.

      • 205167117

Do people still go to porn sites lol? I’m sure it has nothing to do with the 16 standard advertisements on each page plus the subscription pop up on the home page.

If you ever get a slow load on the home page you actually can see the Chinese symbols for each button. It’s a cheap interface that’s likely open-source which is allowing the vulnerability. You’re relating to porn sites because they use the same free tools.

      • Global Warming is a Hoax

        I was joking.

      • 205167117

I know, just needed an excuse to expand on the complaint. So what’s at bat for the next screen name? Honestly I’m a little disappointed in this one. Thought you would take it up a notch and not down a gear lol

    • Lord Trump, Westeros

the best part is they aren’t moderatged!

      • 205167117

Every Discus thread is moderated by the author and Discus certainly has a Code of Conduct. Which circles us back to they either aren’t looking or are accepting the activity regardless.

    • KaayC

Yes, Agree and what is going on here? Racist rants, spam. And inability to report any of it.

  • Andy Pat

Consider this a stay of execution. The Ax will still fall!
