A fire Wednesday morning in a Brick Township condominium community left five pets dead, police said, as the investigation into the blaze continues.

The fire was spotted by a passerby who saw smoke coming from the building at 94 Primrose Lane in the township’s Herbertsville section, and called 911, sand Brick Police Sgt. Jim Kelly.

Upon arrival the fire department found a working structure fire at that residence, at which point a second alarm was transmitted and Breton Woods and Pioneer Hose Fire Companies were dispatched to assist, Kelly said. Ramtown and Point Pleasant fire companies were dispatched for a FAST team and cover assignment. Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 15 minutes.

Kelly said the residents were not at home and no one was injured. The fire, however, claimed the lives of five pets – two dogs and three cats.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
