There’s been a lot of news from the high seas as of late. Britain’s Royal Marines seized an Iranian tanker, then Iran seized a British tanker, then just today the U.S. Navy sent a carrier through disputed areas of the South China Sea.

Back here in Brick, we have our own nautical problems. Captain Morgan has been taken hostage from his perch outside the River Rock bar and grill  – and his rightful owners may know who has him. But before the authorities are called, the bar staff announced that they would give the perpetrator a chance to bring the larger-than-life-sized statue back home.

According to a social media post, River Rock’s Captain Morgan statue, an ode to the brand of spiced rum that carries his name, was stolen the night of July 18.

“We do have a witness that will speak up if the Captain is not returned by Friday,” the post said. “Please return and no questions will be asked. Please do the right thing and return it.”

If the statue is not returned, and the police do track down the perpetrator, a momentarily poor decision could turn into a criminal record. According to online pricing, the statue in River Rock’s photo is priced at $3,898 for a used model – far more than enough to warrant a criminal indictment for theft.

River Rock is located at 1600 Route 70 in Brick on the Manasquan River.
