Mike Basile, a 2014 graduate of Brick Memorial High School, was named the Crons Brand Big South Freshman of the Week after making an immediate impact on the Monmouth University football team in just his second game last weekend.

“Mike’s interception near the end of the game came at a pivotal time and helped us secure a hard fought victory against Wagner,” said Head Coach Kevin Callahan.

Basile helped the Hawks secure a 21-16 win over Wagner with the interception, which came in the fourth quarter. With just over three minutes remaining, Wagner recovered a botched snap on a punt at Monmouth’s 26 yard-line, leading the Seahawks to drive Monmouth to their own 13 where they suffered a two yard loss on first down backing them up to the 15. On second down, Wagner quarterback Brian Gehring threw a jump ball in the endzone to his tight end into man coverage but it was Basile who came down with the ball. Wagner, out of timeouts, was unable to stop the clock as Monmouth took the victory formation and ran out the final 1:43 of the game.

Basile finished the game with four tackles, including two solo stops. He now has seven tackles and two interceptions with three passes defended in two career games.

The Hawks are now 2-0 on the season and will travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. this Saturday to take on Duquesne University, their former NEC opponent.
