A township man suffered head and internal injuries Tuesday in an accident that occurred on Laurel Avenue at 1:33 p.m.

Thomas Foiles, 55, was driving his 2000 Dodge Caravan north on Laurel Avenue after just passing through the intersection with Mantoloking Road when he veered off to the right, sideswiping the mail box at 517 Laurel Avenue and then continued northbound, Sgt. David Bedrosian said.

The minivan then hit a parked 2008 Ford Focus that was parked in front of the home at 521 Laurel Avenue before crashing into a retaining wall at the corner of Laurel Avenue and Community Drive where it finally came to a stop.

Foiles was unconscious when police officers and EMTs from Brick Police EMS arrived, Bedrosian said. The EMTs, along with MONOC paramedics, treated Foiles’ head injury and ultimately transported him to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, in critical condition.

Laurel Avenue between Mantoloking Road and Community Drive was closed to vehicular traffic for approximately 2 hours during the on scene investigation by the Brick Township Police Department Traffic Safety Unit. The crash investigation is being conducted Ptl. Jay Lampiasi of the Traffic Safety Unit.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but may have been the result of a medical episode suffered by the driver prior to the crash, Bedrosian said.
