Volunteer firefighters in Toms River extinguished a fire that engulfed a Berkeley Township garbage truck Wednesday after it caught fire on the Garden State Parkway.
According to police spokesman Ralph Stocco, the truck’s driver noticed a smoke condition inside of the cab and immediately stopped the vehicle in the roadway and exited the truck. It then quickly became engulfed in flames by the time the driver had pulled on Lomell Lane, near interchange 83.
Toms River Fire companies No. 1, No. 2, and Pleasant Plains responded and extinguished the 11:44 a.m. fire without any injuries occurring, Stocco said. The roadway was shut down for one hour during the fire and subsequent clean up.
