Brick Township is putting its animal control services out to bid with the hope of saving money in its next contract.
The Jersey Shore Animal Center current holds the township’s animal control services contract. Last year, the township spent a total of $260,000 on animal control, said Business Administrator Joanne Bergin.
“We’re going to go out to bid for the animal control officer piece and do some cost comparisons and see if we can provide the services we are required to provide and do so in a more efficient way,” said Bergin.

Barbara Palmer, who is affiliated with the animal shelter, is currently the township’s animal control officer, according to the Ocean County Health Department. In some municipalities, the animal control officer is not an employee of the designated shelter. According to a county list of shelters, most municipalities use either the county’s northern or southern shelters, located in Jackson and Manahawkin, or the Popcorn Park Zoo in Forked River. Brick and Mantoloking are the only municipalities that use the Jersey Shore Animal Center, which is located off Brick Boulevard.
