Brick Township has received a $450,000 grant from the state’s Safe Routes to School program to fund the construction of sidewalks near Midstreams Elementary School and Lanes Mill Elementary School.

The grant was awarded in 2013, but did not cover the full cost of building the sidewalks, said Joanne Bergin, the township’s business administrator. The township had asked for more money but received $450,000. That led officials to take a second look at the bid specifications to ensure the grant funding would cover the entire cost of the project. The township council passed a resolution Tuesday night to extend the grant window an extra six months to allow the revised bidding process to be completed.

Under the plan, 2.23 miles of sidewalks will be laid down near the two schools, along Midstreams Road from Bella Vista Road to Midstreams Place, and along Lanes Mill Road between Sally Ike Road and Herbertsville Road.
