According to Capt. Ronald Dougard, police arrived to the scene of a single-vehicle crash at 2:56 pm this afternoon on Baywood Boulevard, between Atlantic Dr. and Camden Dr.
The car, a 2005 Nissan SUV operated by 18 year-old Daniel Schwindinger who resides in Brick, struck a utility pole, Dougard said. Schwindinger was the sole occupant of the vehicle.
The crash caused the pole to snap off from its base and block the roadway on Baywood, forcing the road to be closed between Atlantic and Camden drives.
Traffic is being detoured on Baywood between those two streets, Dougard said, and residents in the Baywood area are experiencing a power outage as a result of the crash. A representative from JCP&L is on the scene assessing the damage. Early estimates could mean no power in the affected areas for up to eight hours as crews repair the pole, police said.
Schwindinger received minor injuries from the airbag deployment and refused medical attention at the scene, Dougard said. He was issued a summons by Officer George Williams for careless driving.
It is unknown exactly when the power will be restored or when the roadway will be re-opened.
Williams is the investigating officer in the case, Dougard said.
