A swimmer disappeared in the surf and drowned off a beach in Mantoloking, officials in Ocean County said.

The Ocean County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call at 2:35 p.m. Saturday reporting a 22-year-old man from Yonkers, N.Y. had been swimming with friends when he suddenly disappeared from their sight, said Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

All area life stands were notified and an extensive search from the air, shore and sea was conducted by the US Coast Guard, NJ State Police, and fire and first aid units from all surrounding municipalities, Della Fave said.

At approximately 3:08 p.m., the victim was located unresponsive in the surf by lifeguards from the Bay Head Improvement Association in the beach area at Strickland Avenue in Bay Head, said Della Fave.

“He was brought to shore and CPR was immediately initiated,” he said, and eventually Ocean County Prosecutor Detective Mitch Remig and Point Beach First Aid took over CPR and turned the victim over to EMS for transport to Ocean Medical Center where the victim was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The victim’s name was not released pending notification of family members.
