Mayor John Ducey has already conducted interviews as part of the process of selecting Brick Township’s next police chief.

Chief Nils R. Bergquist will retire Dec. 1 after 39 years in law enforcement, 35 of which he served in Brick.

Ducey said recently that some interviews had already been conducted and a total of 10 candidates would be interviewed for the position.

“We’ve already started” the process, Ducey said.

Under Brick’s form of government, the mayor is empowered to select a new police chief with the advice and consent of the township council. The council will meet once more in October, once in November and then on Dec. 1 where the governing body could confirm a new chief.

Deputy Chief Jim Riccio is currently the second-in-command of the department.
