Two leaders of Brick’s school district recently received new contracts, providing one with a salary increase.
The employment contracts for Interim Superintendent Thomas Gialanella and Business Administrator James Edwards were approved last month, but were recently obtained by Brick Shorebeat through an Open Public Records Act request.
Edwards’ salary has been increased to $176,741 from $174,991, a 1 percent increase. Edwards will also receive an additional $4,000 for declining district-funded health insurance, the contract states. The agreement will be in effect through July 1, 2017.

Edwards is tenured in his position.
Gialanella, under his new contract, will receive the maximum salary allowed for a superintendent in New Jersey. His employment contract states he will be paid $682.69 per day, the pro-rated equivalent of a $177,500 salary. The contract states that Gialanella will work 260 days per year and receive two paid vacation days per month.
Gialanella is not entitled to health benefits under the contract, which lasts through June 30, 2017.
At a recent Board of Education meeting, resident Vic Fanelli took issue with the fact that Gialanella is receiving the maximum salary allowed by law for his position.
“With my experience as a superintendent, I felt that was appropriate,” Gialanella replied to Fanelli’s questioning of the contract.
