A woman driving a Jeep home from the Brick Stop ‘N Shop supermarket was able to escape her vehicle before it became engulfed in flames Saturday afternoon.
“She said she saw smoke coming from under the hood, and then she saw flames coming from under the hood,” said Kevin Batzel, chief of the Brick Bureau of Fire Prevention.
The woman quickly pulled into the nearby Sunoco gas station and got out of the vehicle before the fire spread.
Batzel said workers at the Sunoco station activated a pump shutdown system immediately and called the fire department.
“Fortunately she didn’t pull close to the pumps,” Batzel said.
Firefighters from the Breton Woods and Pioneer Hose fire companies put an end to the blaze. The car was quickly towed out of the gas station parking lot, leaving a large burn mark. The station had reopened by 4:30 p.m.
The name of driver of the vehicle was not immediately available.
