Police say a pedestrian was struck and killed Tuesday night while apparently walking in the lane of travel on Shorrock Street, south of Route 70, officials said.

The accident occurred 5:01 p.m. The pedestrian, Irene D. Perosi, 53, of Devon Court in Lakewood, was pronounced dead 20 minutes later, said Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutor’s Office Detective Brant Uricks and Lakewood Ptl. Alex Guzman conducted the investigation, Della Fave said. Their preliminary findings were that the driver, James W. Howell, 66, of Toms River, was driving a 2010 Mazda travelling southbound on Shorrock Street when he struck Perosi. Howell stopped his vehicle in the right-most lane of travel facing southbound and called 911, Della Fave said. Howell consented to a blood draw, a search of his vehicle and a search of his phone, all of which were conducted, police said.

Principal damage to the vehicle and roadway evidence show the pedestrian was struck in the lane of travel, said Della Fave.  Additionally, no crosswalks are present at that location and lighting was low, he said.
