A Brick Township man’s death has been ruled a homicide by the Ocean County Medical examiner as authorities continue to search for the shooter who took his life Monday night.

The victim of the 9:20 p.m. shooting at the Hampton Garden Apartments on James Street in Toms River was identified as Steven E. Stallworth. Prosecutors released the victim’s name today after notifying his next of kin, said Al Della Fave, spokesman for the prosecutor’s office.

Stallworth died of a single gunshot wound, an autopsy found. He was found unresponsive after Toms River police officers and EMTs went to Building D of the complex Monday night, responding to a 911 call.
