Residents of Brick Township’s Herbertsville section probably have noticed their new tall, shiny neighbor over the past few days – and many have been wondering what it is.
The slim-yet-towering structure is a communications tower that will house a combination of Verizon wireless cellular equipment and emergency communications apparatus, said Kevin Batzel, director of the township’s Bureau of Fire Prevention. The tower is located on the property of the Fire Training Academy on Herbertsville Road.
“It’s part of a new system,” Batzel said, referring to a county-wide upgrade of communications equipment that will eventually culminate in the transition of emergency radios to new frequencies.

The tower received planning board approval earlier this year. It can be seen from both directions of the road, but especially from the west as drivers pass by the Maple Leaf Park complex. Work on the tower was still continuing on Thursday.
