The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said Friday that it was investigating a threat made against Brick Mayor John Ducey that was lodged Thursday.

In a short statement, the office’s spokesman said the FBI was assisting in the investigation, which was described as “active.” No details of the content of the threat were divulged, however it was apparently posted on Twitter.

Ducey was the subject of intense media scrutiny this week after replying to a tweet criticizing the presence of Orthodox Jews in township parks. Ducey advised the poster to call the police if any wrongdoing was suspected, however critics said he should have reacted to the tone of the tweet and rebuked the poster.

The underlying issue has been bubbling under the surface for years. In the past, some Brick residents – mainly on social media, but occasionally at public meetings – have complained that visitors from nearby Lakewood, one of the largest Orthodox Jewish communities in America, have left township parks in poor condition and held large events there, limiting access to residents. The township in 2017 adopted an ordinance creating a permit structure for large gatherings at township parks and facilities.
