The tragic death of a 15-year-old boy in a Brick Township lagoon earlier this month hit home for many local residents, while starting a town-wide conversation on water safety.
Brick police have organized a free water safety class this weekend, led by members of the Police Department Emergency Medical Technician Unit and the Brick Recreation Department’s Ocean Rescue Unit.
The class will be held this Saturday, June 22, at Tilton Fitness, 1686 Rt. 88 in Brick, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The class will go over introductory methods of water safety and water rescue, as well as CPR and first aid.
“It’s also an opportunity for our residents who do not know how to swim a chance to get into the water in a safe and guarded environment,” said Sgt. Jim Kelly.
There is room for 50 participants in the class and will be filled on a first come-first served basis. Registration is available on the township’s website.
