Police in Brick are investigating a shocking hit-and-run incident in which a man was found on the front lawn of a residential home and pronounced dead.
The incident occurred Sunday night at about 10:45 p.m., said Brick Police Sgt. Keith Donnelly of the traffic safety unit. Police were called to the home at 235 Drum Point Road for a report of an unconscious and unresponsive male lying in the front yard.
“Based on their investigation it appeared that the subject had been struck by a motor vehicle which had fled the scene,” said Donnelly. “The subject succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.”
The name of the victim has not been released publicly pending notification of family members.
Based on the evidence at the scene, police say it appears that the victim was walking east on Drum Point Road, on the shoulder of the roadway when he was struck from behind by a vehicle traveling eastbound. The hit and run vehicle is believed to be a mid to late 1990s model Dodge 1500 work van. The van would have damage to the front passenger side, including a broken headlight assembly, said Donnelly.
Vehicular traffic on Drum Point Road in the area of the crash was detoured around the scene for approximately three hours during the investigation.
The ongoing investigation is being conducted by Sgt. Donnelly, Ptl. Lampiasi and Ptl. Farnkopf of the Brick Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has information pertaining to the crash is asked to contact Lampiasi at 732-262-1141.
