A 51-year-old Brick Township man was killed Monday night when he was struck by a car while crossing Herbertsville Road with another man. The accident closed the major thoroughfare down for about two hours between the Maple Leaf Park condominium complex and Maple Avenue.
The accident occurred at 5:52 p.m. in front of Haven’s Farm, 521 Herbertsville Road, on the north side of the roadway as the pedestrians were trying to “beat the oncoming traffic” and make it across to the south side, said Ptl. Gerard Lampiasi. The first man of the pair made it across the roadway, however the second man, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was struck. The driver, whose name was also withheld, was a 26-year-old woman from Brick who was driving a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta. She was not injured.
After the man was struck, according to police, he ran off the roadway to the left and came to a final rest in the wooded area near the entrance to Havens Farm. Both the driver as well as another motorist rendered aid to the man who was struck and performed CPR on him, unfortunately to no avail. He was declared dead at the scene after paramedics arrived.
