A juvenile has been charged with two counts of attempted murder in connection with a double stabbing on beach in Point Pleasant Beach on Monday, authorities announced Tuesday.

The person arrested is a juvenile from Newark. The suspect’s gender and age were not provided by officials, though witnesses said they saw a male under arrest at the beach after the incident. Initially, police took two people into custody, but ultimately determined the juvenile suspect should be charged.

“Our collaborative investigation revealed that this juvenile was responsible for both stabbings,” said Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer. “We did have two individuals in custody last night, but only one of them is responsible for both stabbings.”

Both victims were in serious but stable condition Tuesday morning, Billhimer added.

The incident occurred on a beach owned by Jenkinson’s, a privately-owned beach property that is open to the public for a fee. The company’s staff was complemented by both visitors and officials for their response.

“Everyone involved from the moment this heinous crime occurred really went above and beyond,” said Billhimer. “The Jenkinson’s Lifeguards, Jenkinson’s management and security staff and the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department, collectively, are the reason these two young men are still alive and we have the right person in custody.”

The juvenile is simultaneously facing charges of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. The suspect is being detained in the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center.
