Members of the U.S. Coast Guard rescued a man from a charter vessel six miles off Manasquan Inlet on Sunday, likely saving the man’s life after he suffered a medical incident on board.

USCG officials said the 60-foot Arrow was just northeast of the inlet when watchstanders received a call requesting assistance for a 58-year-old man on board who was experiencing shortness of breath.

The USCG Sector Delaware Bay command center, based in Philadelphia, consulted with a Coast Guard flight surgeon who recommended to medevac the man to a hospital. A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Manasquan Inlet launched to meet the yacht. Once on scene, the boat crew removed the person from the vessel and transferred him to emergency medical services waiting at the Coast Guard’s Shark River Inlet small boat station.

The call for assistance was placed via VHF marine radio.

“Well prepared mariners who are equipped with all of the necessary safety equipment including reliable communications enable us to assist them in their time of need,” said Joseph Hartline, Operation Unit Controller at the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay command center.
