A serious accident between a bicyclist and the driver of a Jeep occurred after the bicycle, which had an electrical motor, suddenly crossed in front of the vehicle’s path to switch sides of the road, Brick police said Thursday. The accident seriously injured the bicyclist and caused minor injuries to the driver.

Police were called to the scene of the accident, roughly in front of Windward Beach Park, near Stoneham Drive, at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday, said Ptl. Victoria Finelli. A preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle, a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee being driven by Jennifer Amato, 41, of Brick, was traveling east in Princeton Avenue in front of Windward Beach. The bicyclist, Donovan Martinez, 18, was also traveling east on Princeton Avenue in the east bound bicycle lane at the time.

As the Jeep was approaching the Jetson Bolt Pro electric bicycle, the bicyclist “turned left in an attempt to cross Princeton Avenue” in front of vehicle the Jeep. The Jeep then collided with bicyclist just west of the intersection of Princeton Avenue and Stoneham Drive. As a result of the crash, the bicyclist was thrown from the bicycle.
