An accident that was caused after two juveniles struck a vehicle while riding on a dirt bike led to the teens being transported to a hospital and a busy Brick Township artery being closed for a period of time.

Sgt. Jim Kelly said police received a call at 8:42 p.m. Thursday night for a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a dirt bike and a white SUV near the intersection of Lanes Mill and Millbrook roads in the Herbertsville section.

According to police, two juveniles, ages 14 and 16, were on the bike. The 14-year-old was the driver.

As the dirt bike, described as a 2002 KTM Enduro Four-Stroke, was traveling south on Lanes Mill Road approaching the intersection of Millbrook Road, the second vehicle, a 2016 Acura MDX, was traveling north on Lanes Mill Road and was slowing down to make a left turn onto Millbrook Road.

As the Acura, being driven by Daniel DeJianne, 65,  was attempting to conduct its turn, the dirt bike hit the right front portion of the SUV. The impact ejected both the driver and passenger off the dirt bike, Kelly said.

The driver of the dirt bike then left the scene on foot prior to police arrival and was later located at his residence, said Kelly.

Both the driver and passenger of the dirt bike suffered “internal injuries,” according to police, however only the passenger was taken to the hospital for treatment. Neither the driver of the Acura nor his passenger were injured.

Lanes Mill Road was closed down in both directions and vehicular traffic was detoured for approximately two hours during the investigation, Kelly said. An ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Brick Township Police Department Traffic Safety Unit.

The accident is under investigation by Ptl. David Thergesen from the Brick Township Traffic Safety Unit. Anyone who may have witnessed or has information related to the crash is being asked to contact Thergesen at 732-451-2037.
