Mothers’ Day Nor’Easter Whips Up Wild Waves at the Jersey Shore

A rare, late-season nor’easter blew ashore at the Jersey Shore to usher in Mothers’ Day weekend, bringing winds gusting in excess of 50 m.p.h. and heavy surf.

Fortunately, the Ocean County area avoided the worst of the flooding that had been predicted, with all major roadways passable and few areas seeing much in the way of backwash through storm drains. But a coastal flood warning was placed into effect from 11 p.m. Saturday night through 7 a.m. Sunday for the overnight tide cycle.

A high wind warning remained in effect as well, calling for northeast winds 25 to 35 m.p.h. with gusts up to 60 m.p.h. on Mothers’ Day morning. Power crews could be seen staged in numerous areas Saturday, with the NWS predicting downed trees and power lines.

The storm is expected to gradually move out of the region Sunday, though strong winds are forecast to linger. The system will move completely out of the region by Monday.
