A heat wave is underway at the Jersey Shore, with the National Weather Service issuing a heat advisory and an excessive heat watch for the region Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
A hazy sun set beneath Barnegat Bay Tuesday night, with temperatures remaining in the 90s even after dusk – and the blistering-hot temperatures will continue through most of the week. For the Heat Advisory Wednesday, heat index values of 100 to 105 are expected. For the Excessive Heat Watch Thursday, dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of 105 to 110 degrees are possible, according to a statement from the NWS office in Mount Holly.
The advisories will run from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. The NWS warned that “extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.”
There is no respite in sight, according to the latest forecast. Wednesday’s high will be 94 degrees, Thursday’s high will be 96 degrees, Friday’s high will be 95 degrees, and Saturday’s high will also top out at 95 degrees. There are indications that the string of 90-plus degree days will continue into next week.

The hot weather will be paired mainly with bright sunshine. The only opportunity for precipitation, according to the NWS forecast, will come Thursday afternoon, with a slight 20 percent chance of a shower after 2 p.m. – but otherwise sunny.
