A local woman was ticketed after her car crashed into the 7-Eleven store on Burnt Tavern Road in Brick Monday morning, police said. Meanwhile, the store is closed while its owners await repairs.
Brick Police Sgt. Jim Kelly said the accident occurred at 10:42 a.m. Monday, after which police received a call that a vehicle had crashed into the store, located at 1151 Burnt Tavern Road. The store is a one-story, commercial building on the corner of Burnt Tavern Road and Burrsville Road.
The driver, 58-year old Mary O’Brien from Howell, accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake as she was pulling into a parking space in front of the store, Kelly said. There were no injuries sustained in the one-car accident.
O’Brien was cited with a careless driving summons.
The front of the building sustained significant damage, and was evacuated. The township and county building and health departments responded to assess the damage and safety concerns. In addition, the Laurelton and Herbertsville Fire Companies responded with the Brick Township EMS and the Technical Rescue Team to secure the damaged building.
When a Shorebeat reporter went to the scene to take photos, the owners of the store – a husband and wife – were still sweeping up glass and invited us inside to take photographs. The electricity and other utilities were still working, and they said they were awaiting the arrival of an insurance adjuster and repair workers who would be able to make the repairs enabling a reopening once the 7-Eleven corporation approved.
