Brick Township has reached a new contract with the Ocean County Health Department to provide animal shelter services to the town through 2029.
The township council has approved a shared services agreement that runs from Jan. 1, 2025 through Dec. 31, 2029 that will provide for animal facilities services. Ocean County operates shelters in Stafford and Jackson townships, and may take over what had been the Toms River municipal animal shelter on Oak Avenue pending an agreement with the township.
The township will receive housing for 50 stray animals per year for free, with each additional animal being taken care of for $55 each. If an animal is deceased, the county will charge $32 for cremation services. An animal quarantined for 10 days after biting a person or another animal will cost $150, plus $4 per day after the initial 10 day period.

Under the agreement, pet owners who surrender their animals will pay $65 each for dogs and $45 each for cats if there are fewer than 20 surrenders per year. If there are more than 20 surrenders, the shelter will charge $75 for dogs and $50 for cats. Seized animals will be held for a $25 administrative fee, a $37.50 daily fee for dogs and a $22.50 daily fee for dogs, if more than 20 are seized during the course of a year.
Specimen preparation for rabies tests will cost $75.
Business Administrator Joanne Bergin said A-Academy of South Jersey Wildlife Control will continue to serve as the township’s animal control provider under a separate contract.
