Republican Tom MacArthur has beaten his Democratic opponent, Burlington County Freeholder Aimee Belgard, to represent New Jersey’s third district – including Brick Township – in the U.S. Congress.

Belgard, who led in her home county, could not overcome a groundswell of support for MacArthur in Ocean County, where he won by a 60-36 percent margin. In Ocean County, MacArthur received 45,310 votes compared to Belgard’s 27,152.

The Associated Press officially called the race at 9:47 p.m.
