Shopping locally and supporting township businesses is being urged this holiday shopping season – and township officials are urging residents to utilize the “Buy in Brick” program to earn a property tax rebate in the process.

Mayor John Ducey has joined mayors across the United States in proclaiming this Saturday, Nov. 29 to be Small Business Saturday as part of a national initiative to support locally-owned small businesses. The initiative was first promoted by Women Impacting Public Policy, a non-partisan small business advocate and operational arm of the Small Business Saturday Coalition.

“Small businesses are the backbones of our communities.  Many of our small business owners have deep roots in Brick Township.  They were born here, went to school here and continue to live here,” said Ducey, in a statement. “They give back a great deal to Brick Township and I encourage all residents to support them and show your appreciation for all they do for our community.”

Beyond helping the town’s business community, Brick residents can “shop small” and save on their taxes through the township’s Buy in Brick program. Under the program, participating businesses donate back a pre-determined percentage of a resident’s bill to the resident’s property taxes. Those who wish to participate use a card issued at town hall to receive the rebate on their taxes.

“This program is a win-win for the entire community,” said Ducey. “It gives residents the opportunity to lower the amount of money they pay in property taxes by shopping in town. For business owners, it gives them the opportunity to promote their business and gain a lot of new customers and make sure their current customers keep doing business with them.”
