Brick officials honored Public Works Department employee John Koester at a township council meeting Tuesday night, recognizing his 20 years of service to the township on the heels of his winning the American Public Works Association Employee of the Year award.

Koester, hired as a laborer in 1995, is now the “go-to guy for everything at the Department of Public Works,” said Mayor John Ducey.

Known for going above and beyond his duties, Koester takes on numerous projects in town, including striping parking lots, safety and efficiency projects and more. Koester is also responsible for managing the transportation to and from Summerfest events each season.

“John is the one who developed the system for the buses, and manages all the pickups,” said Ducey. “There’s never been one single incident, everyone has always been transported safely.”

Most recently, Koester volunteered to set up lights and escort guests to ensure a safe environment for the annual Senior Citizen Prom, at which high school students and seniors meet for a dinner dance.

“John, we’re proud to have you working at Public Works,” said Council President Paul Mummolo.

Koester was recently honored at the New Jersey League of Municipalities convention in Atlantic City.
