BMX, the acronym for bicycle motorcross, is a sport in which competitors race and perform stunts on specialized bikes. Kathy Schachel, a Brick resident, has been one of the most notable women in the sport, winning 55 races including the European championship. Schachel was also featured on the cover of BMX Plus Magazine in 1979.

In October, Schachel was inducted into the National BMX Hall of Fame. She is credited with “setting the tone for future generations of girl racers, showing them that girls can not only jump and get rad like the boys, but sometimes, you can even beat ‘em!” a video from USA BMX says.

“I’m truly, truly humbled,” Schachel said during her acceptance speech.

The township honored her with “Kathy Schachel Day” last week.
