The Mantoloking Bridge ran on built-in generator power during this week’s nor’easter, proving the system’s worth, said county officials.

The bridge, which spans Barnegat Bay between Brick and Mantoloking, was subject to a power loss due to a problem at a nearby JCP&L pole, said Ocean County Freeholder Gerry P. Little.

“They couldn’t send a repair person up in the wind, so thank goodness we had everything up and working with the generator,” said Little.

The bridge, unbeknownst to motorists, operated on the generator for about 24 hours, Little said.

Since the storm, county crews have also been attending to road and drainage issues. Officials said the county was in the midst of cleaning out thousands of storm sewers that may be clogged with debris, and are working to fill potholes that developed.
