A Brick woman lost her life Monday night after – according to witnesses – running out onto Route 70 against a traffic signal and outside of any crosswalk, leading to an investigation that shut down the major roadway for hours.

According to a police report, Kathleen M. Winits, 55, was crossing Route 70 at Olden Street, going towards the Brick Motor Inn Motel, at about 6:55 p.m. The report said she had crossed Route 70 against the pedestrian crossing signal, and was not in the crosswalk.

Meanwhile, a 2020 Mercedes-Benz C300 being driven by Jennifer L. Squires, 43, of Brick, was traveling in the left travel lane, eastbound on Route 70, approaching the intersection with a green light. The car struck the pedestrian, then came to a controlled stop, according to police.
