On The Border, a Texas-based Mexican restaurant chain that operates nearly 150 locations nationwide, will open its sixth in New Jersey in the Ocean County Mall this spring, the company announced Thursday.

The privately-held restaurant brand is partnering with Simon Properties Group to become an anchor restaurant in the township’s new outdoor shopping and dining development. Located in the Ocean County Mall complex at 1201 Hooper Avenue, the opening will mark On The Border’s first new corporately owned unit to debut since 2017.

On The Border said the Toms River location will serve as the introductory location of an all-new prototype featuring a fresh design with “comfortable adobe colors balanced with traditional Mexican accents.” A new décor package with artwork inspired by the brand’s heritage will round out out the restaurant chain’s customary vibrant atmosphere.

“The enhanced, efficient footprint will allow for expedited service times and include an OTB To-Go station to streamline the delivery and pickup process,” the company’s announcement said.

The restaurant is known for its Tex-Mex cuisine, including chips and queso, sizzling fajitas, burritos and more. The restaurant will have a liquor license and will serve its signature margaritas, for which it is well-known.

In preparation for the grand opening, On The Border plans to hire up to 50 employees in the coming weeks.

“We can’t wait to introduce On The Border’s bold, delicious menu and fun, lively environment to more of the Jersey Shore,” said Mike Wood, the company’s chief real estate officer. “Ocean County Mall is the premier shopping destination in the area, so our team is thrilled to debut our new prototype here. The smaller footprint will enable us to quickly serve our authentic border-style favorites and ice-cold ‘ritas to the Toms River community.”

On The Border operates in 31 states as well as 13 locations in South Korea.
