Brick Council Approves Ordinance Setting Height Limits for Sheds, Accessory Buildings

The Brick Township council on Tuesday night unanimously adopted an ordinance that sets height and setback limits for accessory structure – secondary buildings on residential property that usually represent a shed, detached garage, pole barn or similar building.

Building trends have changed in recent years, especially in Brick’s residential areas, where homes are often taller and larger to comply with new flood codes and regulations. While the height of homes in the township have been regulated for decades depending on the zone in which one’s property is located, accessory structures had no specific guidelines.

Accessory building height and setback regulations adopt March 2023, Brick Township, N.J.

An accessory structure, according to Brick Township’s zoning code, “is subordinate to, and serves any principal building or use” on a property, and is any structure that “contributes to the comfort, convenience or needs of occupants of the principal building or principal use served.”
