In a sure sign that summer can’t be too far off, traffic lights on Ocean County’s northern barrier island were reactivated Friday – an annual event that causes a bit of confusion for locals and makes things feel a bit more familiar to visitors used to the busy summer season.
The traffic lights along Route 35 that flash amber during much of the fall, the winter and a portion of spring, were reactivated by the state Department of Transportation on Friday. Speed limits, however, generally remain at their “off-season” levels for a short time after the signal reactivation and have not yet been lowered.

Lights from Brick Township to Seaside Park are now activated along with crosswalk signals and cross touch sensors. A few intersections do remain active year-round, such as Washington Avenue in Lavallette, the location of borough hall and Lavallette Elementary School. Seaside Heights’ lights also remain activate year-round.
