Brick Sports Dome: Owners Hope for Groundbreaking by Summer’s End

Construction on the “Superdome” sports complex in Brick – approved in slightly expanded form this spring – will get underway in earnest toward the end of the summer season, the township’s mayor said Tuesday night.

“They did come in to meet with the township today,” said Mayor Lisa Crate, in response to a question from a resident. “They had a couple of minor modifications they wanted to make.”

More significant modifications to the site were approved in May, when the township’s planning board gave the go-ahead for the site’s developer to expand the width of the domed portion of the complex by 10-feet, allowing for enough space to host regulation fields for multiple sports.

The “dome” complex will actually consist of two buildings: the “bubble” like structure that will represent a playing field for various athletic activities, as well as a traditionally-constructed building that will house basketball courts and a number of other sports and fitness features and amenities, plus an outdoor volleyball court. The hard-built structure will remain the same size as originally proposed, but the dome will grow from 68,400 square feet to 72,000 square feet in area. A day-care facility was also approved for the site at the May hearing.

Crate said Tuesday that construction will be moving forward quickly.

“We’re hopeful that we will see a groundbreaking by the end of summer,” she said.

“This summer?” the resident asked, jokingly.

“Yes, this summer,” the mayor confirmed.

The site, which at one time housed a Foodtown supermarket and Bradlee’s big box store, came under township ownership in the early 2000s and took nearly two decades to redevelop as officials and mayoral administrations debated options ranging from a full-service hotel to a taxpayer-funded community center. The Sports Dome is privately owned.
